We are not very impressed by Philips technology in this dvd players, but for the bargain hunter THE Philips DVP-5140/37 is a good choice to occasionally play dvd movies. We do have many others choices, please see the comparison chart below. This player has good features, but it often has problems due to it's poor design and laser pickup. Playing DVD-r and +r discs or any disc that had even minor scratches was almost impossible to play on this unit when we were testing.

Nothing but problems

I purchased this dvd player and have had nothing but problems with it. I've owned Philips stuff before and have had good luck. This player played my foreign and USA movies, with mediocre picture quality when they played. But it was very often that some discs would just say loading and then "NO DISC" on the display. This happen with almost all my family DVD-r discs, and many original movies from our collection as well.

I bought this player for my parents, who are retired and enjoy watching movies from the UK. I set it up for them, but it has been nothing but a nightmare. It takes up to 2 minutes to load a disc, and when it loads sometimes disks start to pause automatically half way through the movie. I wouldn't recommend the player. I my self have a Pioneer DV400 I bought from you guys, and it has served me very well. I will exchange this for the same player for the same one I have.

I purchased this player because I wanted a cheap player for my kids to learn German and watch German movies. I have one that we use purchased from you guys as well that I am extremely happy with. It was the Toshiba SD-4990. This particular unit made by Philips is very picky as to which discs it will read. It feels very cheap and flimsy. But for the most part, it does play the German movies.
