ColorStream Pro, Digital Cinema Progressive and DivX Certification

ColorStream Pro component video output allows the highest quality signal to be sent from the SD3990 to your TV. When this connection is utilized with today's HD-compatible sets, typical NTSC artifacts (like video noise and dot crawl) are virtually eliminated, resulting in a low-noise, highly detailed picture with unequaled color purity. Digital Cinema Progressive (3:2 Pulldown) delivers the smoothest, most film-like images to any progressive scan television, such as an HD-compatible one, and ensures maximum resolution. DivX Home Theater Certification allows playback of DivX, AVI and MPEG4 (.ASF) compressed files downloaded from the internet on a personal computer and stored on CD-R or CD-RW disc.

A Coaxial Digital Audio Output sends the audio signal to an audio/video receiver in its digital form, allowing access to the Dolby Digital or DTS sound track encoded on the DVD disc. Virtual Surround Sound provides a simulated surround sound effect from sources that contain only a stereo soundtrack. Convenient when playing older DVD films or for use with home theaters not equipped with multi-channel playback compatibility.

The JPEG viewer enables the display of digital photographs captured in the JPEG format. Simply load the CD with your favorite photos and create custom slide shows with a few simple clicks of the player's remote control. The Digital Picture Zoom lets you select an area of the picture and zoom in on it. Digital Picture Zoom allows you to select an area of a DVD picture you want to zoom in on and magnify it. Enhanced digital processing during moving video or freeze-frame playback produces superior color fidelity and resolution, even when you're zoomed in. This feature can also be used to expand letterbox-only films to increase the viewable area on-screen.

The MP3 and WMA audio compatibility of the SD3990 expands its functionality to include playback of custom music collections encoded in MP3 or WMA digital audio format onto CD-R or CD-RW media. There are also an increasing number of commercially produced discs now available in these formats that you can enjoy on your new DVD player thanks to its additional decoding abilities.

The SD3990 can be set to automatically go into a screen saver mode after several minutes of inactivity. While in this mode, the Toshiba DVD logo appears and "ping-pongs" across the screen. Many movies will display the main movie menu indefinitely after the movie has ended. If left onscreen for a prolonged period, burn-in on the TV screen may result without this feature.

Never despised a machine more then this?, ...., March 2006

Reviewer: (Tucson AZ USA)

Never in my life have I despised a mere machine as I do this dinky thing.
Bought it  because It was cheap, Code Free, and  I have a Toshiba TV also with what they call ColorStream. I am happy with the Toshiba Tv.
Where do I begin?  The tray release is eensy-weensy and must be pressed and re-pressed before it begins to open or close.  In fact, all the controls are eensy-weensy and irritating to finagle.
Gimcrack is the word for this item, a thing so cheap and flimsy it will hardly sit down on a shelf.
But then, I despise the accompanying manual just as fiercely.  Some labor group must have PAID Toshiba to deliberately mislead and confuse and omit information from the defenseless consumer.
The front panel lights up and says "NO" instead of "ON."
That really sums it up.
Next time I see a Toshiba product, I too will say NO NO NO NO, and a thousand times NO!

This player was purchased to watch my movies from England. The good part is it did play them. The company did a really speedy delivery. I ordered Monday Night, and I had it on Wednesday morning. I just did the standard shipping too. The bad part is that the player is really slow, it gets stuck sometimes when playing movies, and the video quality is not that great. For the price, it is okay, If I can go back I would probably have spent a little more and gone with another unit.

This player really has some serious issues ...., April  2006

I'd give it zero stars, if I could. Stay well away!!!  It's a flawed design. The tray itself was skimped on - The drive sucks, It takes 10 minutes to load a DVD. After it loads, it freezes up multiple times half way into the movie.  It causes a movie watching experience to be more frustrating then enjoyable. I have had many other much much better Toshiba players. I exchanged this for the Toshiba Sd-755 which came highly recommended by friends and the sales guy at this company, and it is much better so far. I've only had it for a week though.

I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole ...., April  2006

This player sucks... I ordered it online, I got it pretty quick, it was cheap $74 for a code free player. It would have been perfect if it worked. I can't even express how many problems it has. It skips, DVD's get stuck inside, it even scratched one of my discs!!! I ordered online, and then called in to a rep. The sales guy admitted to me that this was a piece of S**T. He told me to go with another unit. I haven't decided what I'm going to do yet, but I should have never order this thing.
